The Story Behind Our Coconut Bowls

The Story Behind Our Coconut Bowls

Origin Trips: Coconut Bowls

At Auri Home, we place our trust in nature – using sustainably farmed local materials while creating meaningful opportunities for farmers and artisans in southern Vietnam. Our coconut bowls, made in partnership with Jungle Culture, are sustainably handcrafted in Bến Tre, a lush region within the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam.

In this region, coconuts are a way of life. The milk and meat are typically harvested for food and cosmetic use, while the shells were once considered waste – often discarded or burned by local villagers. By transforming these discarded shells into natural, reusable bowls, local farmers have found an environmentally friendly way to use every part of the coconut while reducing unnecessary burning and waste.

The rise of coconut bowl production has given farmers in Bến Tre a valuable secondary income, empowering them to employ local artisans who carve and polish each piece by hand. What began as a small-scale idea has become a thriving example of sustainable innovation and community-driven craftsmanship.

Every Jungle Culture coconut bowl is hand-selected by local agents who travel between farms to source the thickest, most durable shells. This careful selection ensures that only a tiny percentage of bowls are damaged during transport – keeping emissions low and sustainability high.

Bến Tre itself is a region shaped by water, with countless rivers and canals flowing through its fertile land. These natural waterways form an organic irrigation system, allowing farmers to grow crops with minimal external water use. Yet, this same beauty also makes the area vulnerable – local experts warn that rising sea levels could submerge more than half of the province in the coming decades.

This serves as a powerful reminder of why sustainable practices matter. Every coconut bowl represents a small but significant step towards supporting communities that live closest to nature – communities already feeling the impact of environmental change.

At Auri Home, we’re proud to share the story of Bến Tre’s artisans and farmers – the hands and hearts behind every coconut bowl.
By choosing to shop sustainably, you’re not just reducing waste – you’re helping preserve a way of life, protect the planet, and empower people who are shaping a more conscious future.

Meet The Maker

Our bamboo cutlery sets were initially carved by Há, a devoted naturist who has worked with bamboo his entire life.

The popularity of our utensil set has prompted Há to employ and train his family, friends and several other villagers to carve bamboo cutlery. Providing them with jobs and skills while he has turned his focus to building bamboo houses which serve as accommodation for members of the local community.

Há treats his workers with respect and pays them fairly which was what first attracted us to his crafts. He now employs between 5-10 people who carve cutlery and help with the construction of his bamboo houses.
